Into The Sunshine:
Overcoming Anxiety & Depression
Saturday, May 14, 2011 - 10:00am to 4:30pm
Holy Trinity Cathedral Center Ballroom
337 East 74th Street, New York City
The Agapi Circle, a ministry of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, will hold a conference on anxiety and depression on Saturday, May 14th, 10am-4:30pm, at the Cathedral. Titled Into the Sunshine: Overcoming Anxiety and Depression, the conference will bring together experts who will discuss the symptoms of anxiety and depression and how they affect men, women, children, adolescents, and the elderly. The event will include talks by experts, a literature table, and a question and answer session. We are fortunate to have Greek doctors and psychologists who are leaders in their fields, as well as to have Ms. Tina Santorineou as moderator. The forum is geared towards individuals and families who are coping with these conditions as well as for professionals and the general public. Many people suffer silently with a variety of psychological or emotional conditions without knowing what to do or where to get help.
The tenets of Christianity and the teachings of Jesus are all about helping the less fortunate, working to lessen suffering, promoting peace and justice and using will and motivation to change the world. In this spirit, the Holy Trinity Cathedral in New York City formed The Agapi Circle. Under the stewardship of Father Frank Marangos and with invaluable assistance from Steve Hantzarides, clergy and concerned laypersons, our Circle is working together to create greater awareness, action, and support for people with a wide variety of concerns and conditions. This includes: emotional problems, family and children’s issues, grief support, relationship issues, elderly/caregiving, and addictions. We are in the process of creating support groups based on the needs of people in the Greek community and we welcome your input!
Our first conference, which is free of charge, will include:
• Guest speakers
• Complimentary lunch
• Literature tables
• Question and answer session
Afterwards, people can mingle, browse the literature, meet the panel, and enjoy hors d’oeuvres.
Talks will include:
• The Hidden Message of Anxiety and Depression – Calliope Callias, Ph.D
• Real Men Have Feelings, Too: The Full Emotional Experience of Men – Tom Mallios, Psy.D
• The Power of Prayer: Reducing Stress - Father Frank Marangos, Dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral

• The Role of Medication in Treating Depression and Anxiety – Vassilios Latoussakis, MD
• Late-life Depression: Is it a Natural Part of Aging? – Dimitris Kiosses, Ph.D

The Sunday after the conference, The Agapi Circle will hold its annual Outreach Sunday event on the Day of the Paralytic, May 15th, with a special service by Father Frank Maragos on the topic of inclusion, awareness and greater acceptance of persons with disabilities and other conditions. The service is followed by a reception and coffee hour with literature tables and discussion with Agapi Circle members.
